When to use it

Use ～一方で to present two contrasting or coexisting facts within a single sentence — typical in reports, analyses, and email where you need to balance a positive against a negative (or vice versa). It is more neutral and more written than ～けど／～のに, and unlike ～に対して it can contrast two aspects of the same subject. In meetings it works well for framing trade-offs ("we're cutting costs, but at the same time...").

Formation

Verb: plain (dictionary/ている/た) form + 一方で — 伸びている一方で、進める一方で
い-adjective: plain form + 一方で — 厳しい一方で
な-adjective: 〜な + 一方で (formal writing: 〜である一方で) — 堅調な一方で／堅調である一方で
Noun: 〜である + 一方で — 黒字である一方で
The で is often dropped in writing (～一方、) with no change in meaning; ～一方では adds slight emphasis on the contrast.

Examples

Sales are growing, but on the other hand our margins are falling.
We want to cut costs while still maintaining quality.
Domestic demand is solid, while overseas we're struggling.
Junior hiring is going well, but turnover remains an issue.
The client is tough on price but flexible on the deadline.
