Grammar

~を通して

~ o tōshite

through, by means of

When to use it

Use ~を通して when specifying the medium, intermediary, or experience by which something is accomplished — routing a negotiation through an agent, learning something via a project, or covering a whole span of time (一年を通して). It is standard in written reports, email, and formal speech; the near-synonym ~を通じて is slightly more written/formal and favors abstract channels, while ~を通して leans toward active, deliberate use of a means. For simple physical routes or instruments, plain ~で or ~経由で is more natural.

Formation

  • Noun + を通して — the only direct attachment: 代理店を通して、経験を通して、一年を通して
  • Verbs: must be nominalized first — 話し合う → 話し合うことを通して / 話し合いを通して
  • i-adjectives / na-adjectives: no direct attachment; nominalize the state — 厳しい審査を通して、丁寧な対応を通して
  • Time nouns give the sense "throughout": 年間を通して、期間を通して
  • Formal written variant: ~を通じて; plain-speech alternative: ~経由で

Examples

  • We are conducting the negotiations through our local agent.

  • We will contact you with the details via the person in charge.

  • Through this project, the problem areas have come into view.

  • We assess candidates' suitability through the interviews.

  • Demand for this product stays steady throughout the year.
