Grammar

N2

~を経て

~ o hete

via, after going through

When to use it

Use ~を経て in written or formal spoken Japanese to mark a stage, procedure, or span of time that was passed through before reaching the current result — typical of reports, minutes, press releases, and contract-related email. It also marks an intermediate point on a route (physical or organizational): information passing via a branch office, for example. In casual speech you would say ~のあとで or ~を通して instead.

Formation

  • Nouns: 「N+を経て」 — almost exclusively nouns denoting a process, procedure, period of time, or waypoint (審査・交渉・承認・歳月・支社).
  • Verbs: no direct attachment. Nominalize the action first: 「検討する」→「検討の段階を経て」「協議を経て」.
  • i-adjectives / na-adjectives: not used.
  • 経て is the て-form of 一段動詞 経る; the finite form 経た can modify a noun (「二年を経た今」), and 経て itself always leads into a following clause.
  • Register note: 経て is markedly literary; the neutral equivalents are ~のあと/~を通して.

Examples

  • After three rounds of negotiation, we finally reached an agreement.

  • We will place the order officially once it has passed board approval.

  • After the document screening, we will send you interview details.

  • Reports go up to head office via the local subsidiary.

  • After ten years, the business turned profitable.
