When to use it

Use ～を機に in written or formal spoken Japanese to mark an event as the trigger or turning point for a deliberate change — a merger, an anniversary, a reorganization, a transfer. It is common in press releases, internal announcements, and email where you want to justify a decision by tying it to a milestone. The near-synonym ～を契機に is heavier and more analytical, while ～を機会に leans toward "taking advantage of the chance to."

Formation

Noun + を機に: 上場を機に / 創立記念を機に (the core, overwhelmingly common pattern)
Verb (plain, often past) + のを機に: 本社が移転したのを機に
i-adjective: not used directly; nominalize — 業績が悪化したことを機に
na-adjective / noun predicate: nominalize with こと — 手続きが煩雑なことを機に (rare and awkward; prefer a noun of change)
The event must be a discrete occurrence, not a state; the following clause normally expresses an intentional action or decision, not an accident.
Formal variants: ～を契機に(して)、～を機として。

Examples

Marking our 50th anniversary, we will be changing our company name.
I'd like to take this merger as an opportunity to review our workflows.
With the change in account manager, we renegotiated the terms.
