~ o yogi naku sareru

To be forced into ~; left with no alternative but ~; compelled by circumstances.

When to use it

The passive, heavier register cousin of ~ざるを得ない. Press releases, formal filings, board minutes, IR statements. Externalises the blame onto circumstances — useful when you need to acknowledge a hard reality without sounding either resigned or aggressive. Subject is positioned as the receiver of an unavoidable force.

Formation

  1. 急激な円安により、当社は事業計画の全面的な見直しを余儀なくされた。 Kyūgeki na en'yasu ni yori, tōsha wa jigyō keikaku no zenmenteki na minaoshi o yogi naku sareta. Due to the rapid yen depreciation, our company was forced into a full overhaul of the business plan.

  2. 部品調達の遅延を受け、生産ラインの一時停止を余儀なくされております。 Buhin chōtatsu no chien o uke, seisan rain no ichiji teishi o yogi naku sarete orimasu. Owing to delays in component procurement, we have been forced to temporarily halt the production line.

  3. 規制当局の指導により、上場申請の取り下げを余儀なくされた。 Kisei tōkyoku no shidō ni yori, jōjō shinsei no torisage o yogi naku sareta. Following regulatory guidance, we were forced to withdraw the listing application.
