Grammar

N2

~ようによっては

~yō ni yotte wa

depending on how you look at it

When to use it

Use when reframing something — arguing that a fact, proposal, or setback can be evaluated differently, or that a tool/system yields different results according to how it is handled. Very common in meetings and reports when softening bad news or hinting at hidden upside/risk. Restricted to a handful of verbs (考える・見る・使う・言う・やる・扱う), so treat it as semi-lexicalized rather than fully productive.

Formation

  • Verbs: ます-stem + よう + によっては — 考え + よう → 考えようによっては、見ようによっては、使いようによっては、言いようによっては、やりようによっては
  • Only verbs take this form directly; the ~よう here is the nominal "way/manner of doing" (cf. 使い方), not the volitional よう
  • Nouns: no direct attachment. Mark the noun as object and keep the verb: 「この条項は解釈のしようによっては…」/ use 見方によっては、~次第では instead
  • i-adjectives / na-adjectives: not possible. Rephrase with 見方によっては or 場合によっては
  • Fixed with は; 〜ようによって (without は) sounds incomplete in this framing sense
  • The contrastive は implies "from one angle at least" — the second clause typically states the unexpected or opposite evaluation

Examples

  • Depending on how you look at it, losing this contract is also an opportunity.

  • Depending on how it's used, this system can become a real weapon.

  • Even the same figures can yield a different conclusion depending on how you read them.

  • Depending on how it's phrased, it could well provoke the other side.

  • Depending on how we go about it, shortening the delivery schedule should be possible too.
