When to use it

Use ～まい in formal writing and stiff speech as the literary equivalent of ～ないだろう (strong negative conjecture) or ～ないつもりだ／～ないようにしよう (negative volition). In business contexts it appears in written reports, formal correspondence and set expressions like ～ではあるまいか ("could it not be that…") and ～(よ)うが～まいが ("whether or not"). It sounds archaic and decisive in conversation, so reserve it for documents, editorials, or a deliberately weighty spoken remark.

Formation

  • Godan verbs: dictionary form + まい — 言うまい、値上がりするまい(→する below)、届くまい
  • Ichidan verbs: dictionary form + まい, or ます-stem + まい (more literary) — 応じるまい／応じまい
  • する: するまい／すまい／しまい ・ 来る: 来るまい／来まい(こまい)
  • i-adjectives: ～くはあるまい — 安くはあるまい
  • na-adjectives / nouns: ～では(じゃ)あるまい／～ではあるまいか — 偶然ではあるまい
  • Set patterns: ～まいとする (resolve not to)、～ではあるまいか (isn't it that…?)、～(よ)うが～まいが／～(よ)うと～まいと (whether or not)

Examples

  • Under these terms, the other party surely won't agree.

  • We vowed never to repeat the same lost deal.

  • This quarter's profit drop isn't due to the weak yen alone.

  • Even holding prices, the customer exodus surely won't stop.

  • Whether we raise prices or not, demand will fall.
