Manner, way, appearance; how one does something

When to use it

Describing how someone acts, performs, or conducts themselves; or how something appears or develops in a business context (often with observational or evaluative tone).

Formation

Verb: 働く → 働きぶり → 彼の働きぶりは積極的だ (His manner of working is proactive) (hataraku → hatarakiburi) I-Adj: 上手い → 上手いぶり → プレゼンの上手いぶりに皆感心した (Everyone was impressed by how well he presented) (jouzu → jouzuburi) Noun: リーダー → リーダーぶり → 新部長のリーダーぶりは信頼を勝ち取った (The new director's leadership won trust) (rīdā → rīdāburi)

Examples

  • How has it been since promoting Tanaka to team leader? What's his leadership style like?

  • Excellent. His manner of explaining new rules is clear, and staff questions have decreased.

  • How is his negotiating style with clients? The previous team leader sometimes was too aggressive in negotiations.

  • Completely different. His negotiating style is flexible and wins strong client trust. The improvements are remarkable—this quarter's contract count is 150% of last quarter.
