On the occasion of; at the time of; when [doing X]

When to use it

Formal written/spoken marker that ties an action or statement to a significant moment — contract signings, business openings, formal announcements, ceremony remarks. Slightly more elevated than ときに (toki ni); comparable to にあたって (ni atatte) but skews more toward written/legal contexts. Signals: "because this moment is significant, I am doing/saying the following." Common in: contract preambles, company announcements, formal speeches, meeting openings, official notices.

Formation

  1. 契約締結に際して、双方の合意事項を確認いたします。 Keiyaku teiketsu ni saishite, sōhō no gōi jikō o kakunin itashimasu. On the occasion of concluding the contract, we will confirm the agreed terms of both parties.

  2. 新事業の立ち上げに際し、皆様のご支援に心より感謝申し上げます。 Shin-jigyō no tachi-age ni saishi, mina-sama no go-shien ni kokoro yori kansha mōshiagemasu. On the occasion of launching our new business, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for your support.

  3. 海外赴任に際して、必要な手続きを事前に完了しておくことが重要です。 Kaigai funin ni saishite, hitsuyō na tetsuzuki o jizen ni kanryō shite oku koto ga jūyō desu. When being posted overseas, it is important to complete the necessary procedures in advance.
