～に見合った

When to use it

Use ～に見合った when stating that one thing is proportionate to, or worthy of, another — typically pay to performance, returns to risk, or results to investment. It is the standard register for written business Japanese (proposals, reports, negotiation emails) where 「～にふさわしい」 sounds more subjective and 「～に応じた」 focuses on variation rather than balance. Frequently appears in the fixed collocations 実績に見合った報酬・リスクに見合ったリターン・投資に見合った効果.

Formation

  • Noun + に見合った + Noun — the core and by far the most common pattern: 実績に見合った評価.
  • Verbs / adjectives: cannot attach directly. Nominalize first — 働いた分に見合った給与, 難しさに見合った報酬.
  • Other forms of the same verb: 〜に見合う (plain/attributive, more formal in headings: コストに見合う効果), 〜に見合って (adverbial: 業績に見合って支給される), 〜に見合うだけの (emphatic: 投資に見合うだけの成果).
  • Note the verb is 見合う (intransitive, 〜に marks the standard); ×〜を見合った.

  • We guarantee compensation commensurate with your performance.

  • I wouldn't call that a return commensurate with the risk.

  • We're not yet seeing results commensurate with the amount invested.

  • We will prepare a position commensurate with your experience.

  • We'll review internally whether the quality matches the price.
