～に準じて

When to use it

Use ～に準じて in formal writing to say that something is handled in accordance with an existing standard, rule, precedent or schedule — or that it is treated on a par with / proportionately to something else. It is standard vocabulary in contracts, internal regulations, HR notices and business email, where it replaces the more neutral ～に従って with a nuance of "modeled on / pegged to" a benchmark. Avoid it in casual speech; 〜のとおりに or 〜に合わせて is more natural there.

Formation

  • Noun + に準じて / に準じ / に準ずる / に準じた：規定に準じて／前例に準じ／これに準ずる措置／慣例に準じた対応
  • に準じ is the clipped literary form used mid-sentence in documents; に準じた／に準ずる modify a following noun.
  • Verbs and adjectives do not attach directly. Nominalize instead: 記載されている内容に準じて, 前年に実施した方式に準じて.
  • The verb is 準ずる／準じる (both readings current); the negative is ～に準じない, and 〜に準ずるもの is a set phrase meaning "the equivalent thereof."

  • Please settle travel expenses in accordance with company regulations.

  • The contract period follows that of the previous project.

  • Temporary staff are given treatment on a par with full-time employees.

  • The fee was set in line with the going rate in the industry.

  • Details will conform to last fiscal year's implementation guidelines.
