When to use it

Use ～というものだ when you want to assert, with a touch of conviction, that something is by its very nature thus — a judgment or definition presented as self-evident common sense. It's common in written commentary, opinion pieces, and in meetings or negotiations when pushing back on an unreasonable position (「それは無理というものです」). Note the near-opposite ～というものではない, which denies that something automatically follows.

Formation

Verb (plain form) + というものだ — 「一人で背負い込むのは、無理というものだ」(often the verb clause is nominalized with のは first)
い-adjective (plain form) + というものだ — 「これで満足しろとは厚かましいというものだ」
な-adjective (stem, no な/だ) + というものだ — 「身勝手というものだ」
Noun + というものだ — 「それは責任逃れというものだ」
Polite: ～というものです / formal written: ～というものである。Negative judgment ≠ ～というものではない ("it's not necessarily the case that…")

Examples

Asking us to change the specs at this stage is simply impossible.
Pushing all the responsibility onto the field staff is just cruel.
Calling that a subordinate's mistake is nothing but dodging responsibility.
To judge on the numbers alone is reckless, plain and simple.
Only by meeting deadlines does anything like trust come about.
