Grammar

N3

~て初めて

~te hajimete

only after doing

When to use it

Use ~て初めて when the main clause becomes true only as a result of the first action — typically a realization, insight, or change that was impossible before. In business writing it frames experience-based lessons: field visits, post-mortems, promotions, customer feedback. The second clause almost always carries 分かる・気づく・実感する・見える or similar, so avoid it for mere chronological sequence (use ~てから).

Formation

  • Verb: て-form + 初めて — 使ってみて初めて、聞いて初めて
  • い-adjective: ~くなって初めて — 忙しくなって初めて
  • な-adjective: ~になって初めて — 不便になって初めて
  • Noun: N になって初めて / N を経て初めて — 責任者になって初めて、審査を経て初めて
  • Second clause: realization/possibility verbs (分かる・気づく・実感する・見えてくる); past tense for a specific experience, non-past for a general truth.

Examples

  • It was only on rereading the contract that I noticed the omission.
