Nihongo Dojo — N3 → N2

Grammar

N2

~ことから

from the fact that; hence the name

When to use it

Use ~ことから when you want to present an observed fact as the grounds for a conclusion, judgment, decision, or a name. It is heavier and more analytical than ~から/~ので, so it fits reports, minutes, proposals and email where you show your reasoning rather than just state a cause. It cannot introduce a request, invitation or command in the main clause — the second half must be a conclusion, assessment, or resulting action.

Formation

  • Verb: plain form + ことから (伸びている → 伸びていることから / 遅れた → 遅れたことから)
  • い-adjective: plain form + ことから (近い → 近いことから)
  • な-adjective: な / であった / 〜である + ことから (不明確な → 不明確なことから、written: 不明確であることから)
  • Noun: である / だった + ことから (初回である → 初回であることから) — plain 〜だ does not attach
  • Negatives and past tense attach freely: 届いていないことから / 合意に至らなかったことから
  • 〜であることから is the standard written/business shape; 〜なことから sounds slightly more spoken.
